Anchor Text SEO That Wins In 2013

I’m going to assume if you are here reading this article you already know what anchor text is and how to use it for SEO. That being said, I am writing so newbies can follow along and the more seasoned can still pick up a new trick or two.
Exact Match Anchor Text
This is simply using your target keyword as the anchor text. If the keyword we are targeting is, ‘anchor text seo’ then our anchor text would look like this:
This is the type of anchor text that many over utilized in their backlink strategies and have been punished for doing so by recent Google algorithm updates. The days of only building backlinks with your main keyword as the anchor text are over and are not coming back.
Partial Match Anchor Text
Using your target keyword as part of the anchor text is another variation that can be incorporated into your backlinks strategy. Continuing along the same vein, if we’re targeting the keyword phrase ‘anchor text SEO’, a partial match example of this would be ‘anchor text SEO cheat sheet’.
Relevant Keyword Anchor Text
Targeting just one keyword for each page of your website is common and a big mistake in my opinion. Having diversity in your anchor text lends itself well for a strategy of ranking your pages for multiple keywords when done in coordination with your on page optimization.
‘Effective anchor text strategies’ would be a good example of a relevant keyword variation you could use. Add that phrase to the content of the web page and build backlinks with the same anchor text.
URL Anchor Text
If you haven’t been building links to your sites with just your plain old domain name as the anchor text, it’s time you started. So, if I was building backlinks to this site you can be sure that some of the anchor text would just be my raw URL, ‘http://affiliateboy.net‘.
Leaving no stone unturned, I always like to go a step further and get every inch of diversity that makes sense. You may want to consider leaving the ‘trailing slash’, the ‘www’ and the’ http://’ both on and off as well as every variation possible when building backlinks with your URL anchor text. Here are sample combinations for this website.
http://www.affiliateboy.net/ http://www.affiliateboy.net http://affiliateboy.net/ http://affiliateboy.net www.affiliateboy.net/ www.affiliateboy.net affiliateboy.net Affiliateboy.net AffiliateBoy.net
Don’t forget you can add even more variation when building links to sub pages within your website. For example, if I was building links to this page your are reading now I may want to add the following URL anchor text variations:
http://www.affiliateboy.net/anchor-text-seo-that-wins-in-2012/ http://www.affiliateboy.net/anchor-text-seo-that-wins-in-2012 http://affiliateboy.net/anchor-text-seo-that-wins-in-2012/ http://affiliateboy.net/anchor-text-seo-that-wins-in-2012 www.affiliateboy.net/anchor-text-seo-that-wins-in-2012/ www.affiliateboy.net/anchor-text-seo-that-wins-in-2012
The size of your link building campaign may determine how many of these variations you will want to use.
Brand Name Anchor Text
This one is simple. Start using your company or brand name as the anchor text in some of your backlinks.

Generic Anchor Text
It’s also a good idea to use generic anchor text variations. Anchor text profiles with terms like ‘learn more‘ or ‘click here now‘ appear more natural than using keyword anchor text alone. Google will be able to interpret if the content surrounding the generic anchor text is relevant or not to the url it is linking to and act accordingly.
Here’s a giant list of generic anchor text variations. You can go a step further than most here as well. Including generic anchor text variations that are lower case, UPPER CASE, Sentence case and Capitalized will give you extra diversification. Feel free to add or remove variations to these lists as you see fit.

Misspelled Words As Anchor Text
I do not use or recommend this method but you could build links with misspellings as your anchor text in hopes of improving search position for those misspelled keywords. Google does have new filters for Google bombing (link bombing) so if you are going to build backlinks and you want your site to rank well for those terms you will be better served by adding those same misspelled words to your page.
Having a website riddled with spelling errors is not professional. In the end it will most likely end up hurting your rankings and reputation more than you ever gain by using them. However, there are some slick ways to utilize misspellings on your website without the side effect of seeming unprofessional.
- Add a “commonly misspelled as…” section to your page so you are providing helpful information to your readers
- Add the misspellings in user-generated content on your site – if you have a blog simply post a few fake comments including the misspellings
- Forum owners can gain even more “juice” by creating a forum thread where the misspelling is inserted into the title tag
Hopefully, you have learned a few new techniques for enhancing your anchor text SEO. This is a pretty comprehensive post, so actually implementing all of these techniques into your backlink plan may seem a little overwhelming. It doesn’t have to be, if you are using the right tools and following a simple process.
